Wordy Words

It’s no secret. I have a hard time writing. For some reason, I still write like I’m in high school writing an essay. I re-read my sentences over and over again until I’ve edited them to death and they sound like I’m desperately searching for a good grade. I recently came across an article on HOW Design’s website that talks about this (apparently I’m not the only one with this problem).

The first point talks about approaching writing as you would a design, by sketching. Easy enough, right? Instead of doodling images, write a bunch of words that relate to your topic. After that, move on to pouring over annuals and websites that have great writing. Observe their techniques. Again, this is something I do when I design, so it only makes sense to do this when I write.

The rest of the article talks about other points to follow, but I think the main message is summed up by saying it also takes practice. I guess that’s partially why I’m trying to keep up with writing this blog. Not only is it a great way to keep my audience updated on my work and what’s going on, but it’s also great practice for me.

I don’t expect to become a novelist, nor do I really want to become a novelist. I just want to put words together that sound good. Not like a book report that I did in school, but like something I could pass off as a semi-professional writer. Luckily, I have an arsenal of freelance copywriters at my disposal for those times when I really need some good old fashioned writing. Until then, I’ll keep practicing and who knows? You might see me on the best seller’s list in the future. I gotta have goals, right?

To find the article I’m referencing, go to http://www.howdesign.com/design-creativity/idea-generating-tips/writingfordesigners/. You should also just poke around their website. HOW Design really knows what they’re talking about when it comes to graphic design. It’s definitely my go-to for all things design-related.
